Dorothea Hotel and Mindszentyneum have received the Construction Excellence Award
For the twenty-fourth time in 2024, the Board of Trustees of the Construction Excellence Awards Foundation (ÉMA) has announced the Construction Excellence Awards on behalf of and with the authority of the Founders and Affiliates. This year, thirteen projects have been awarded the profession’s highest recognition, including two projects which TSPC Group and its partners designed.
Dorothea Hotel Budapest
The Dorothea Hotel Budapest received the award in the Public Building/Commercial and Hospitality category. The project has created a unique luxury hotel in the heart of Budapest through the conversion and heritage reconstruction of three historic buildings. TSPC Group provided general design, permit and construction design services, as well as BIM expertise, while Market Építő Zrt. carried out the construction.
The project’s professional justification by the jury:
“The three separate buildings of Budapest’s city centre, once of sophisticated design and construction, with different functions, were combined into a single unit by the designers, with a glass roof of around 1,000 m² over the common inner courtyard. The renovation and functional transformation of the three buildings – the Wéber House, the MAHART House and the Münnich/Futura House – posed a unique challenge, given the organisational difficulties and constraints of heritage conservation. The facades were preserved, while the interior was completely transformed, including the creation of a 16-metre-deep dry basement. The harmonised lamella internal facade, centred around a covered space on the second floor, has been meticulously organised to create a unified internal structure. The planted interior is a notable attraction, and the result is a world-class hotel building.”
Mindszentyneum
The Mindszentyneum received the award in the Public Building/Commercial and Hospitality category. This contemporary museum designed by TSPC Group and Konkrét Stúdió showcases the legacy of József Mindszenty with innovative architectural solutions, such as the perforated “mantle”, which creates special lighting effects. TSPC Group provided general design, project management, climate design (CEED), environmental design and technical control services while ZÁÉV Zrt. was our partner in construction. In 2023 the project was awarded the Special Award for Major Developments in the Media Architecture Awards.
The project’s professional justification by the jury:
“The museum is located in the heart of Zalaegerszeg, adjacent to the recently renovated Göcseji Museum, serving as a poignant memorial to Cardinal József Mindszenty. The five-storey building features a distinctive aluminium lamella facade, a “membrane” that symbolises the building’s sacred significance. The interior spaces, organised around an atrium and a grand staircase, are designed to impress visitors. The central feature of the rotunda-shaped space with its high ceilings is the life-sized white statue of Cardinal Mindszenty. The lighting has been meticulously designed to create a unique experience, combining artificial and natural lighting. The building’s meticulous design pays homage to the Cardinal’s unwavering dedication to the Church.”
